I’ve tried to cover all topics of veganism through this account, but my main focus has always been banning the sale of fur. I started Fur Free LA because it’s an issue I’m passionate about, I love fashion (cruelty free that is), and I believe the public is more informed and more accepting of a fur ban than most issues.
Hypocrisy gets brought up a lot as do questions like “why not leather?” or “why not farmed animals?” I see no difference, and I would love it if I could fight for them all, but being specific is what makes me effective. I use my talents where I know I can make the greatest impact. That should never be confused with not caring. Trying to get people to stop killing and wearing arctic foxes doesn’t mean I don’t care about pigs. I ❤ pigs.
Say I was an activist for breast cancer. Would that mean I don’t care about lung cancer or prostate cancer? No. The same goes for animals rights. Just because I’m an animal rights activist, doesn’t mean I don’t care about people. They’re loaded questions that try to stray away from the topic at hand.
All of that said, it is most amusing to listen to people who see Asian countries that kill dogs and cats as barbaric, when we’re stuffing our faces with cows, pigs and chickens. One would hope that someone could see the hypocrisy in that, but alas, we’re still killing billions of animals for food every year.
There is nothing wrong with focusing on one issue, but if you do find yourself appalled by the treatment directed towards one species, why not extend that compassion to all forms of life, and get the violence off of your plate? #vegansofig
