Animal shelters care for 6-8 million dogs and cats every year in the United States, of whom approximately 3-4 million are euthanized. There is no central data reporting agency for animal shelters, so these numbers are estimates, but these estimates are disturbing.

It is VITAL that you adopt, and never buy an animal from a breeder or a pet store. Shelter adoption fees are practically nothing compared to what a “professional breeder” (whatever that means) might charge. There are a number of “No Kill” shelters, but unfortunately not all are well maintained. The animals might not be killed, but they are subjected to a life in a cage.

The only way to prevent this senseless cruelty is to adopt and to fix your pets! Puppies are cute, but dead puppies are not. I’m serious. If you’re irresponsible enough to let your dog have puppies, you should be fixed as well.
