My dog Jesse is a rescue. He is absolutely terrified of loud noises due to his history, so when the fireworks start, I’m at home with him every 4th of July.

More pets go missing on July 4th than any other holiday. Halloween takes a close second. Fireworks are extremely scary for animals, so here are a few tips to help your pets through the holiday.

1⃣ Do not take your pet to fireworks displays.

2⃣ Do not leave your pet in the car with only hot air to breathe inside a car, your pet can suffer serious health effects, even death, in a few short minutes. It is also against the law.

3⃣ Keep your pets at home, indoors, in a sheltered, quiet area – some animals can become destructive when frightened, so be sure that you have removed any items that your pet could destroy or that would be harmful to your pet if chewed or ingested. Leave a television or radio playing at normal volume to keep him/her company while you are away.

4⃣ Never leave pets outside unattended, even in a fenced yard or on a chain. In their fear, pets who normally wouldn’t leave the yard, may escape and become lost, or become entangled in their chain, risking injury or even death.

5⃣ Make sure your pets are wearing identification tags so that if they do become lost, they can be reunited promptly. For future reference, I highly recommend having your pets microchipped.

6⃣ Loud noises, confusion and fireworks are not the only hazards that pets can face during the holiday. Alcoholic drinks, chocolate, raisins, onions, grapes, insect repellents, citronella candles, insect coils, oil products, matches, lighter fluid and glow jewelry all have the potential to poison, injure and even kill your pets. 🇺🇸
