Vegan mascara is one of the hardest makeup products to find. Some of my favorite brands (Too Faced, 100% Percent Pure, Tarte, Hourglass, and Mineral Fusion) do not have a vegan mascara. Beeswax and elastin are usually the culprit. Mineral Fusion claims their mascaras are vegan, but I don’t consider beeswax vegan.
(*Tarte may have vegan mascara, but it’s not on their list of vegan products. I’m still waiting to hear back from the company to confirm.)
➡ I decided to set out on a quest to find the best vegan mascara. I’ll list what I tried from best to worst.
1⃣  Gabriel Color Mascara - This was my favorite. Good brush. Easy to apply. Overall best look. Purchased from Whole Foods.
2⃣   SunCoat Natural Mascara - Almost the same as Gabriel, but I did find Gabriel’s to be slightly better. Purchased from Vegan Essentials.
3⃣  Beauty Without Cruelty (BWC) - Great brush, but it didn’t seem quite goopy. It felt like there wasn’t as much mascara in the bottle or perhaps it was slightly dryer/lighter coat. Purchased on Amazon.com
4⃣  Lavera Volume Mascara - Thinner brush and not as volumizing , but it did have nice coverage. It smells lovely, but the rose fragrance irritated my eye. Looks like it comes in unscented as well. I would buy it again sans fragrance. It was harder to track down in black, but I found one on sale on Amazon.com
5⃣  Urban Decay Lush Lash - Urban Decay’s only vegan mascara doesn’t have your normal brush. It’s more of a bristle. Long lasting, but it doesn’t have thick coverage. It’s also a growth serum mascara. They have another “Lush Lash System" that’s vegan.. and $42. My lashes are already long, so I opted for the cheaper one. You can buy it on their website or from Sephora.
6⃣  Ecco Bella - Nice bottle and even came with a mirror on the back. Same with the BWC mascara, it felt like a dryer consistency. Average brush. It wasn’t my favorite. Purchased from Vegan Essentials.
7⃣  Korres - Very, very liquidy. It had an alright coat, but the brush was horrible! It’s made with synthetic beeswax. I had read from multiple sources it was vegan. I double checked the ingredients too. When it finally arrived it said it “may contain carmine.” Ugh. I’m going to try and return it. Do not buy this product. It sucks.
8⃣  ZuZu Luxe - I’m not sure why others rated this mascara so high. It didn’t apply well and barley looked like I had anything on. Zuzu is an all vegan line, but Zuzu has never been good to me. Bummer. Purchased from Whole Foods.
9⃣  No Miss Natural Mascara - Meh. Not good. Don’t bother. You won’t miss it. Purchased from Vegan Essentials.
✴None of the mascaras I tried were very clumpy, which is good. I think beeswax is what adds the volume, but makes the clump worse. I highly recommend investing in a good eyelash curler with vegan mascara.
I was on a budget, so I have not tried Larenim, e.l.f, Manic Panic, Emani Minerals, or Arbonne yet. Larenim’s mascara was $30. Has anyone tried it? I’m curious about e.l.f.’s mascaras with synthetic beeswax. They’re only $3, so they’re by far the most affordable.
Has anyone had any luck making their own? What mascara do you use?
As I have not covered all of the vegan mascara options, I will do another post. Any suggestions for part two? #vegansofig
