Sometimes people ask me “Don’t you miss cheese?” No, I don’t. You know why they call it “cheese?” Because coagulated milk fat doesn’t quite have the same ring to it. “You can’t have ice cream?” I can have whatever I want. I choose not to have ice cream. Well, dairy ice cream. Frankly, the vegan alternatives taste better to me.
I’ve trained myself to be repulsed by the sight and smell of animal products. When you focus on where your food came from, it loses it’s appeal. There is a learning curve, especially when your omnivore days were so infused with animal products. Now, I can look at a carton of milk and my mind flashes to those images of a calf being ripped away from its mother. The smell of milk now makes me queasy. I can picture hens crammed into a battery cage when I see eggs. Meat is the easiest. Seeking packaged animal flesh with a price tag breaks my heart.
It makes me so angry that no one else can see it. Walking through the grocery store sometimes I just want to scream out, “Put that turkey burger down, Mr!" When I go out shopping with my friends and one of them asks me if a leather shoe is cute, what I am supposed to say? "It’s cute if you don’t mind a cow having it’s throat slit for a stiletto."
That’s what bothers me the most. We’re so attached to our food and our products. We can’t fathom living without them, even when their production meant taking a life. “But I can’t live without ___.” Of course you can. To me that’s a sign that consumer society has you wrapped around their finger. We’ve finally reached the point where there’s a vegan alternative for everything, and they’re quality.
Eating a plant based diet doesn’t make you any less of a man. What a smear campaign that is. Utter bullshit. When compassion is your priority, life without animal products is easy. ✌ For me, there is no other alternative than veganism. Unapologetic and proud. Vegan for life. #vegansofig
