To deal with a defensive meat eater, you have to understand them. A typical response would be “Mmm meat is SO good. I just had a juicy steak.” The mindset behind a comment like that is just to wind you up and make you angry. They want you to lose your cool, because if you do, anything that you say can and will be used against you. All it is, is an intimidation ploy. It’s meant to belittle your cruelty free lifestyle because what you represent threatens what they were conditioned to accept as normal. It’s a predictable behavioral response.
If they were to truly able to hold their own in a discussion, they’d offer more than an opinion and what their taste buds enjoy. If you point out their logical fallacies, they’ll probably counter with one of the these arguments:
1⃣  Something about how they know a small “happy farm” that kills their animals humanely (whatever that means…)
2⃣  Humans have always eaten meat or something about Native people
3⃣  How they once new a vegan who was really annoying or one who almost died because they weren’t doing it right.
4⃣  How the apocalypse would ensue if the world went vegetarian overnight.
5⃣  Something about nutrition (Protein, calcium, B12…)
➡ You’ll notice they’re all extreme conditions or implausible examples and don’t really counter anything. If you play your cards right, they’ll most likely revert back to telling you “I can eat whatever I want!” …But that’s not a valid response either. It’s a clear indication that they don’t have a comeback to defend eating animal, because there is none.
Putting you down is just to shut you up before you say anything that might make them feel guilty for killing and eating an animal. Everyone feels guilt whether they like to admit it or not. Only a sociopath doesn’t feel guilt. By talking about animal rights, you’re bringing up that suppressed emotion. Defensiveness is a response to striking a nerve.
Now, before any of you jump my bones, I’m not saying every omnivore is like that. If they can respect me and my veganism, I’m happy. It’s the arrogance and bullying that I won’t stand for. I’m not saying vegans are perfect either. There’s a lot of arrogance amongst us too. We have to fight our initial instincts that make you want to punch someone in the face.
Keep cool my babies, that’s what kick boxing classes are for. #vegansofig
