I’ve been having a difficult time recently managing the comments. It’s been a growing problem, and I’m not sure what the best way is to deal with it. I don’t want to censor people, but I also don’t want every thread to turn negative and accusatory.
Forget the individual argument and look at the greater picture. It looks bad that we can’t get along. What are the vegan stereotypes? That we’re “preachy” and “elitist.” How do you think dogging someone for not being vegan enough looks to the outside world? Doesn’t matter if you’re right. How do you think that person feels? Rather than being open to listening to what you have to say, you’ve just turned them off. I tune people out not because I don’t like what they have to say, but because of their tone.
Whenever I post about animal abuse, it’s always interesting to see the people who threaten violence against someone who’s inflicting violence. I’ve had death threats from people who have mistaken me for one of the stores I’m petitioning. Really? Come on…
Unless you were born vegan or vegetarian, every single one of you was an omnivore at some point in your life. Remember that. When we attack each other publicly, the whole world can see, and it’s only helping the animal abusers.
If you do have a problem with something someone has said, you can gently offer some advice. “Hey, I’m not sure if you’re aware that SILK is owned by Dean Foods, one of the largest dairy producers in the country. Just wanted to give you a heads up!”
As opposed to: “How could you drink SILK? Don’t you know they’re owned by Dean Foods?! You’re supporting animal suffering and murder! You shouldn’t consume processed foods anyways, you’re going to get cancer!”
See what I mean? There’s a way to address an issue without an aggressive tone. You’d be surprised at the difference in reaction you’ll get. I’m human, just like everyone else here. I make mistakes. I appreciate it when people can point out a mistake, but I don’t appreciate bad attitudes. Okay? Just think before you type and press send and encourage your fellow veggies. #vegansofig
