When I was in high school, a boy asked me out and I said no. A few days later he and his friend started “SAVE: Students Against Vegan Extremists.”  …I was the only vegan in school. *ْ They started a livejournal that made fun of my every move, put flyers all over campus, and they even created a CafePress, making t-shirts and other products spreading the “anti-vegan message.”
I had my house egged. I had prank calls and notes slipped to me in class telling me that they were going to come to my house and kill my animals while I was asleep. It was disgusting and horrible.  What’s worse is that when I reported their behavior as abusive, the principle said that it was “freedom of speech” because they never specifically said my name, Amy.
If they wanted to make my life a living hell in high school, it worked. I was horribly depressed, but I couldn’t stop being a vegan. I was in it for life. My savior in all of this was my animal rights workshop that introduced me to veganism and activism. When I graduated, I never looked back.
Bullying did effect me in more ways that I knew. In college I wasn’t as outspoken. I was busy with school, but there was a part of me that was scared to have the same thing happen. I wouldn’t participate in another protest until I started Fur Free LA a year and a half after college. Now here I am today.
In October, I will celebrate my ten year vegan anniversary. There have been tough times, but it was the best fucking decision I’ve ever made.
When you take a stand against anything, there will always be people there to drag you down. Being as vocal as I am, I hear it every single day. There are some days I can brush it off, and there are days when I really feel it. Those who are mad at you for telling the truth, are those living a lie. For those of you who’ve experienced bullying or negative reaction to your cruelty free lifestyle, don’t give up. You stand for compassion, not something as superfluous as the taste of flesh. You matter, and on behalf of the animals and the environment, I thank you. #vegansofig
