So I had my semi annual teeth cleaning appointment today, not my favorite time of year, but it inspired me to write this follow up post on vegan, cruelty free dental hygiene.
1⃣ Brushing and flossing are essential. However, many dental flosses contain beeswax, or they’re manufactured by companies that test on animals (like Crest and Colgate.) You can find vegan, cruelty free flosses by EcoDent, Radius, or the “Stim-U-Dent” by The Natural Dentist.
2⃣ Toothbrushes aren’t really something you have to worry about not being vegan, but DO pay attention to who manufactures the toothbrush. (If you’re avoiding Crest as a company, I’d advise against buying one of their brushes.) I personally prefer Preserve’s brushes. Both eco friendly and cruelty free.
3⃣ Some people don’t believe you don’t need toothpaste. However, the foaming effect from toothpaste is very beneficial… and your breath won’t kill us all. The great news is that there are TONS of vegan cruelty free toothpastes on the market. I’m in the US, but I tried to include as many brands available worldwide.
4⃣ I’m a big fan of Nature’s Gate and Kiss My Face’s toothpastes. However the following brands are all cruelty free and carry vegan toothpaste and mouthwashes: Desert Essence, Auromère, Eco Dent, The Natural Dentist, Jason (subsidiary of Hain Celestial), Weleda, Riddells, Red Seal, White Glo, Green People, Now Foods, VitaCare, Lavera, Dr. Sharp, Green Beaver, and LUSH’s “Toothy Tabs”
*Tom’s of Maine does make vegan dental products, but they are a subsidiary of Colgate Palmolive, so I will not endorse them.
5⃣ I posted a DIY toothpaste recipe earlier in the year, it’s main ingredient being baking soda. However, I highly suggest that you not use Apple Cider Vinegar regularly as a whither. It might get the job done, but your tooth enamel will start to erode.
6⃣ Lastly, most of these products are fluoride free, but not all. Since ingredients and cruelty free policies can change, please double check before buying.
The end! #VegansofIG
